Fox Hunt Returns

Warren Pugh is a master Fox Hunter. We have learned his tricks and trade craft and he still beats us,except for this year! This year he has to hide the Fox!

North Shore Radio Club annual Fox Hunt – July 12

Start Location changes.  There will be no formal club meeting at Heller, instead we are hitting the road and rolling into Glenview.

The Fox Hunt has been a grand tradition with this club for many years. In recent times, we have met at the Glen in Glenview and have tried to combine the hunt with some social times. Last year, because of COVID, the restaurants were closed and we took over the upper parking deck. This turned out to be way more fun than heading to one of the local watering holes.  So, with that in mind, I discovered a rather large parking lot across the street from Air Station Prairie, on the north side of the Glen. That will be our new meeting spot and where we will have an informal gathering afterwards.  (There are no public rest rooms close by.  There is a train station and some restaurants, that might be available.)

For those of you new to fox hunting the concept is pretty simple. The winner from last year has the honor of hiding the transmitter someplace within a boundary area.  The “Fox” or transmitter beacons a signal every minute or so and during that transmission the hunters try to lock into its location.  Last year, we also added a bonus attraction for the over achievers – a second hidden transmitter.  However, the frequency for the second fox will not be made available until you have found the primary repeater.  Details will be follow.  By the way, you can win this event with a simple antenna and a handheld radio.  It is a bit more challenging that way or you can deploy some more sophisticated RF sniffers that can be more competitive.

This event does require some hiking, sometimes through rugged terrain, so dress appropriately.

I am looking for some people to remain behind at the start location to hold down the fort.  Refreshments will be served.  Bring your own chairs and fox hunting tools.  If you want to help on the social side of the event, please contact Rob, K9RST at rob@roborrproductions.com.

If the wx is threatening storms, the Fox Hunt part of the event will be cancelled, but we might move the social side to one of the many local commercial places.
